One of the bigger annoyances of the Nintendo Switch’s handheld design is that you can’t charge it while playing in tabletop mode. Nintendo has tried to remedy this with the Adjustable Charging Stand accessory, a small stand that attaches to the Switch’s USB-C charging port giving you the ability to adjust viewing angles and charge your device as you play on a surface. PDP has taken a look at this grievance and designed a case entirely around it. The Play and Charge Case – Switch Elite Edition allows you to carry your Switch in style and charge while you play in tabletop mode.
The Switch Elite Edition of the Play and Charge Case has a clean look characterized by its simple use of gray and black. The fabric that furnishes the outer shell of the case is textured and tough, giving the case an extra level of grippiness and protection in addition to the handle at the top. The front of the case is adorned with a faux leather sash emblazoned with the Nintendo Switch logo in the center. It’s a straightforward look that makes the case feel somewhat professional and refined, like a mini suitcase for your favorite hybrid console.
The inside of the Play and Charge Case features a few dedicated nooks and crannies for storing your Switch and some of its accessories. The case can hold up to two Joy-Cons, an AC adapter, 6 game cartridges, and a Switch itself. The Switch is stored by removing the Joy-Cons and fitting it under two straps that will hold it into place. The Play and Charge Case makes an excellent use of space by giving some features more than one functionality. For example, the surface on which you secure your Switch also happens to be the integrated screen stand where you store your game cartridges. The middle part of the case has three ridges where you can adjust the viewing angle to your preference. It’s a small things, but it makes the design of the case feel well thought out.
Once your Switch is strapped and secure, you’re free to play and charge as much as you’d like. By holding the Switch a few inches off whatever surface the case is on, the official AC adapter has plenty of room to fit properly. The Joy-Cons fit snugly and safely in their dedicated nooks and the AC adapter has plenty of room to store its brick and cable. Once you’re done playing, you can zip up the case and be on your way.
The Play and Charge Case is a unique way of addressing the Switch’s tabletop charging oversight. The ability to store your Switch and charge while you play in one case is comfortably convenient. For the same price as Nintendo’s Adjustable Charging Stand, it offers a few more benefits other than charging while on a table. PDP’s Play and Charge Case – Switch Elite Edition is available on their website and other retailers for $19.99.
