A patent application for “EYE TRACKING ENABLING 3D VIEWING” was published on January 24, 2019, by the United States Patent and Trademark Office for Nintendo Co., Ltd.
As reported by Digital Trends, Nintendo originally filed this patent on September 27, 2018, with continuations dating as far back as 2010. The abstract of the patent claims to be a technological device with the capability of tracking a user’s eyes in order to provide “3D viewing on conventional 2D displays such as home television sets.”
Nintendo has worked on glassesless 3D technology as far back as the Virtual Boy in 1995 and more recently with the Nintendo 3DS. While both of those devices managed to display 3D images without the need of extra peripherals, they portrayed stereoscopic 3D images through the use of special displays. This patent claims to enable 3D viewing on standard, already existing, displays through a peripheral that tracks a user’s viewpoint and movement as it sits at the top of the screen (similar to a webcam).
