According to trademark applications submitted on February 4, Square Enix is seeking trademark ownership of the words for use in the games, promotional materials, and merchandise. The applications were filed in the UK branch of the European Union Intellectual Property Office.
And as for the three names trademarked: they’re all related to one another. Final Fantasy Adventure was a spin-off Final Fantasy game for the Game Boy, and it released in Europe as Mystic Quest (not to be confused with Final Fantasy Mystic Quest for the SNES). The game was later remade in 2003 as Sword of Mana for the Game Boy Advance. In Japan, the Mana series of games is known under the Seiken Densetsu name.
It’s currently unknown whether these filings will lead to a new game down the line. One thing to note is that Japan got the Seiken Densetsu Collection for the Switch back in June 2017; this collection hasn’t made its way to the West yet.
While the applications could simply be a bid to renew trademarks, there’s a possibility that Square Enix will put these names to use soon. Here’s hoping that a US trademark application for the same names will surface.
