The most recent Nintendo Direct revealed that Deltarune is coming to Nintendo Switch, so it was natural that Nintendo would publish a Toby Fox interview via the Switch News channel.
According to the interview transcription, the idea for Deltarune came in 2011 during a bout of fever. Fox had a vivid dream about an ending of a game and has since tried to recreate what he saw. He initially tried to work on a concept but ended up abandoning the project without making any significant progress. Eventually, he decided that he will come back to that project if he ever finished work on Undertale.
Fox also talked about the main characters’ origins, particularly Kris, Ralsei, and Susie. He described Kris and Ralsei’s origins as “fairly obvious,” while Susie was initially based on Maya Fey of the Phoenix Wright games. He also talked about an unnamed character learning a fire spell despite being bad at using it.
And if you’re waiting for news about Deltarune‘s chapter two, here’s what you need to know: development progress is at 0 percent. Fox mentioned that he’s currently focusing on dialogue and music. Because he’s the only one working on the game, programming work is currently at a standstill.
