One of Nintendo’s biggest highlights during their Nintendo Direct E3 2019 presentation was the announcement of a direct sequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

Game Informer interviewed Breath of the Wild’s producer Eiji Aonuma on why they chose to create a sequel, DLC and Hidemaro Fujibayashi return as a director for this new installment.

Anouma on creating a direct sequel to Breath of the Wild:

“One of the reasons we wanted to create a continuation was because I wanted to revisit that Hyrule again and use that world again, while incorporating new gameplay and new story,” he says.

Anouma also discussed his interest in developing DLC for future Zelda titles, mentioning that he wants to provide players with a deeper experience with their games moving forward:

“I really like the idea of having DLC or anything coming after the main game,” he says. “People play the game longer and enjoy the game a lot deeper. Going forward, that’s definitely something we’ll think about.”

During the interview, Anouma confirmed that Hidemaro Fujibayashi is returning as a director for this sequel, mentioning their hard at work.

When asked whether he was given more time to work on this new game as compared to Majora’s Mask, which was developed in a year:

“When I was making Majora’s Mask, the timeline was in a year,” he says. “I was a little stubborn and I was going to make it from scratch and was really gung ho, but it turns out the staff was a little tired from that process. I’ve learned to give myself plenty of time. You don’t want to do it that way or else you’ll get white hair like me.”

No official release date has been announced for this sequel, however, we look forward to its release sometime in the future. Be sure to check out Game Informer’s full interview by clicking here.
