Overwatch Game Director Jeff Kaplan announced in a developer update video that the game’s first Experimental Mode, “Triple Damage,” is expected to arrive on all platforms on February 25, 2020.
This experimental mode tests team compositions made up of one tank, three damage, and two support players. The idea for Triple Damage arose from the long queue times created by the current Role Queue system in which players make teams comprised of two characters from each role. “When we introduced Role Queue… it added some extra queue time for those players who were playing damage,” said Kaplan.
While the goal of this change is to reduce queue times for damage players, changing the team composition will most definitely have an effect on team and character balance. In order to account for these changes, Triple Damage comes with balance updates that only apply to the experimental mode.
Kaplan stresses that the experimental mode is for, well, experimenting. It allows the Overwatch development team to test “radical gameplay changes” without having to officially patch the game. This way players can try things out and provide feedback in a much more immediate way than pushing an update.
