New information found in the files of Splatoon 2 suggest new maps and weapons are in the works. Data mined from the game’s recent update unearthed a surprise that could really shake up the squid-kid community as we know it. Major spoilers ahead; you’ve been warned.
A group posted the information on r/Splatoon subreddit late last night. Digging through the game’s code, the team found incomplete files that seem to be updated versions of the “Kelp Dome” and “Blackberry Skatepark” maps from the original Splatoon.
Brand new maps may be in the works as well, based on files titled “line” and “tunnel” found within the game. The report claims that developers are testing new maps for Salmon Run as well. Files titled “Shakehouse” and “Threepoints” appear in the latest update, along with testing material for developers.
Adding to the new and updated maps, users found files and images for new weapons. A Grizzco brand Blaster, Charger, and Brella were found, along with a new weapon type called a “Squeezer.” According to weapon text found in the files, the Squezzer is a semi-auto weapon with a high damage output. The text also mentions an “Ink Wall” sub weapon, and the Sting Ray special.
Perhaps the most significant (but speculative) data found in the update was a change to the files surrounding Inkling genders. Parameters that previously controlled gender have been updated to “PlayerType.” The options available for PlayerType are SquidGirl, Squidboy, and “Oct.” It’s tough to say whether this means playable Octolings are coming to multiplayer, however. Octolings are already present in the Splatoon 2‘s single player campaign, so these models could simply be tied to that mode.
