Being a Nintendo fan is quite refreshing, considering the unique experiences each game is offered to fans among previous systems including Nintendo Switch.

Whether you find yourself wanting more from franchises within the Nintendo universe or a mix of third-party characters who may be new to a Nintendo platform, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is the Ultimate culmination of video games all packaged into one. With its announcement last year, Nintendo has once again accomplished the unthinkable by offering fans the ability to further their experiences with new and old characters from previous Smash Bros. iterations with Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

If you’re like me, a game such as Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is a must-have for all Nintendo fans. Collecting and featuring your favorite video game characters with mementos of your past can be quite rewarding as it opens a dialogue among players within the community.

With the rise of fan-inspired creations, a new Kickstarter project has found its way to appease Nintendo fans in the form of custom controllers, showcasing artwork from fan-favorite legends within the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate character roster.

The Kickstarter campaign titled, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Pro Controller Project was created by a talented artist within the Nintendo community named Alexander Blake, often recognized by his alias, Captain Alex. You may be familiar with his work and custom projects ranging from amiibo to controllers and even Nintendo Switch repaints on social media.

As described on the Kickstarter project overview, the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Pro Controller Project aims to create a custom controller featuring artwork for each confirmed fighter in the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate roster. At this current time, only a small selection of these designs are currently available, however, once the campaign is funded, additional character designs will be created for backers.

Any revenue made during this campaign will help to aid the cost of creating these custom Nintendo Switch controllers with the hopes of publishing a photographic art book featuring all the hand-painted controllers. Fans who pledge $55 or more on Kickstarter will receive a custom controller based on their favorite character and will receive additional perks including a unique 10% discount along with their names printed on the published book.

The controllers offered to backers are not OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer), however, they do offer similar features such as the option to play wirelessly with motion and rumble support, and a charging cable will be included as well. Please do note that these controllers do lack NFC support which is needed to scan amiibo figures in-game. Backers who prefer an OEM Nintendo Switch Pro Controller will have the option to upgrade their existing backing for an additional $30 once the campaign has been funded.

For our coverage, we were given the opportunity to check out one of these custom controllers, inspired by one of my favorite franchises, Star Fox. At first glance, I am quite impressed by the controller’s paint job, resembling the Arwing with its navy blue, silver, and red colored accents. As a Star Fox fan and a Fox main in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate this is a dream, considering the fact that Nintendo has yet to release a Star Fox inspired controller for Nintendo Switch.

The controller itself feels quite similar to the official manufactured Nintendo Switch Pro Controller. It’s relatively lighter in weight and the buttons do feel stiff and more outward. Other differences I noticed on this particular controller is how the rumble does feel more prominent than the official Nintendo Switch Pro Controller, which isn’t necessarily a problem, but more of a personal preference than anything else. As mentioned previously, these controllers do lack NFC support, however, for its cost and design, some of these features can be overlooked especially if you prefer to play without them.

Overall, if you’re looking for a controller that will complement your love for these iconic characters, backing a project such as this one could be a great option. Please do note that shipping will begin in December for these controllers if the project is fully funded. For those who are new to Kickstarter, backing a project doesn’t guarantee you’ll receive a specific product or game if a project isn’t fully funded, meaning that your pledge amount will only be charged once the campaign has ended and met its goal.

In partnership with Rose Colored Gaming, fans who want to display their custom controllers with a Smash Bros-like trophy stand will have the option to pledge an additional $20 to their existing backing. Backers who pledge for a ‘Displai’ stand will have the option to choose either a reflective gold or a matte gold variation.
