The Pokemon Company announced that the Pokken Championship Series will return for a new season in 2018. Players can compete in Pokkén Tournament DX during two qualifying events this year. The top players will earn a chance to compete for the $20,000 prize pool in the final tournament.

The series features two age brackets: a Masters division for players born 2002 or earlier, and a Senior division for those born 2003 or later. Players can compete to qualify during one of four events worldwide, including a last chance qualifier during the Pokemon World Championship itself. Space for the last chance qualifier is limited to 256 players; we still have no word on the sign-up limits for other tournaments.

Players hoping to compete will need a wired fight stick of their own to compete, or the wired HORI Pokken Tournament Pro Pad. The announcement specifically notes that Nintendo Switch pro controllers are not tournament-legal, even with a USB cable. Details on the championship, prize pool and qualifier events can be found on the official Pokken Tournament DX website.
