Splatoon 2 is hosting a splatfest this weekend in Japan with the returning theme of Boke vs. Tsukkomi.
The official Japanese Splatoon Twitter account showcased art celebrating the event and providing some additional information on the theme.
さて、どちらかと言えばあなたは…? pic.twitter.com/uHspvshMqx— Splatoon(スプラトゥーン) (@SplatoonJP) January 30, 2019
“Boke” and “Tsukkomi” are references to a comedic routine, where the “boke” is a foolish “wise guy” while the “tsukkomi” is a short-tempered serious character. TVTropes describes the routine by saying “every line of conversation repeatedly leads up to the boke saying or doing something unbelievably stupid, at which point the tsukkomi will finally lose his patience and Dope Slap him.”
