With the imminent launch of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Famitsu interviewed the game’s director, Masahiro Sakurai, revealing new tidbits of information regarding the game’s development. Courtesy of All Source Gaming for translating the latest Famitsu column, Sakurai revealed that Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’s project plan was completed around December 2015, leading to its development on Nintendo Switch.

When choosing fighters to add to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Sakurai wanted to represent content from a newer game, especially for the Pokémon franchise, leading to the decision of Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon’s Incineroar. When developing his character, Sakurai said he wanted to bring him as a Pro Wrestler fighter to the game.

The decision of removing trophies was made very early in development. Sakurai mentions that they decided to focus on bringing back all the fighters, rather than spending time on adding trophies. Sakurai also said, developing trophies would’ve required more development time as it takes more time than what most people think.

As we’re only a few weeks away from the launch of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Sakurai revealed that the game has already gone Gold and he looks forward to the launch of the game and sharing more tidbits about the game’s Adventure Mode and other things in the future.
