Right on the heels of Piranha Plant’s launch, Masahiro Sakurai published another Super Smash Bros. Ultimate related column on Famitsu. This time, Sakurai gave a rare peek on some online play data for the game.

For his column, Sakurai only referred to the data gathered during the week of Dec 30, 2018 to Jan 5, 2019. His biggest focus was the win and loss rate of all 74 characters in one-on-one battles.

Here are some key takeaways from his column:

  • Win rate for characters were between 40 to 60 percent in normal one-on-one matches. Elite matches also have similar numbers, with the lowest percentage at 43.7 percent and the highest percentage at 56.8 percent.
  • 90 percent of the total fighters used in normal online matches have a win rate of 45 percent
  • Sakurai doesn’t think that King K. Rool is a strong character who’s in need of an adjustment. His victory rate is at 51.9 percent (48.9 percent in elite). However, he recognizes the community’s concerns and will defer to the “adjustment team” for recommendations.
  • The most used character in normal online matches is Cloud, while elite players gravitated towards Ganondorf.
  • Sakurai confirmed that Peach and Daisy are the most identical echo fighters, but their win rates in elite battles vary wildly. Peach has a 54.4 percent win rate while Daisy has a 50.9 percent rate.
  • Sakurai believes that all 74 fighters (excluding Piranha Plant) are fairly balanced against each other.
