SEGA hosted a panel this weekend at San Diego Comic-Con with the head director and designer of The Sonic Team, Takashi Iizuka. In this panel reported by Sonic Stadium, we’ve learned new details regarding the upcoming game, Sonic Mania.

Sonic Mania, was originally named Sonic Discovery during its early phases in development and was then renamed.

During the panel, The Sonic Team also confirmed that game will feature sprite cut scenes just as Sonic 3 & Knuckles and will have an opening animation by Tyson Heese, who worked on the hand-drawn Sonic Mania Trailer last May.

Early narratives to Sonic Mania were discussed including a retired Eggman and his machines forming their own gang, the Hard Boiled Heavies.

In addition to revealing a Sonic-CD like special stage, attendees also received an Introduction Manual which details the game’s story, developer profiles and sketch-hog art by Tyson Hesse.
