With the staggering success of Nintendo’s NES Classic Edition console, it’s no surprise that others look to carve out a piece of the classic games market. Classic console manufacturer Retro-Bit has revealed the RES Plus, a compact top-loading solution compatible with Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) cartridges.
The RES Plus boasts a feature that fans of Nintendo’s own NES Classic likely recognize. The console claims to upscale classic carts to 720p with the HDMI input, making the device pretty attractive for fans with a back catalog of NES games but no CRT TV.
Third-party consoles capable of playing retro carts from Nintendo, SEGA, and others aren’t exactly a new concept. Historically, though, these devices have not coupled well with modern TVs. The NES Classic Edition bridged this gap quite nicely, leaving many popular third-party consoles stuck in the low-res age.
The RES Plus looks to take a few other notes from Nintendo’s recent success. The console’s size rivals the NES Classic Edition, weighing in at less than 1lb with a 10-inch by 8-inch footprint. Classic retro, Virtual Boy-esque looks round out the presentation. The brick-like controllers are even compatible with the original NES console.
At $39.99, the RES Plus might draw in players unimpressed with the NES Classic Edition‘s price point. On the other hand, tracking down all your old NES favorites may run your total up a bit.
The RES Plus is slated to launch on August 10th, but pre-orders are already live on Amazon.
