In a new interview, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate director, Masahiro Sakurai revealed new tidbits of information regarding the game’s early development cycle, character additions and the soon-to-be released Piranha Plant fighter.

During an interview with the Nintendo Dream Magazine, (as translated by PushDustIn), Sakurai shared that Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon’s Decidueye was almost considered for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, however, the team decided that Incineroar would be a better fit for the game.

Many questioned as to why no reps from Nintendo’s newest fighting game ARMS or Xenoblade Chronicles 2 weren’t added to the game? Sakurai mentioned that they just had bad timing for the project plan.

Few tidbits were also mentioned regarding Zelda’s new look in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate which Sakurai mentioned that her design was based on Link to the Past and Link Between Worlds.

New additions such as Simon and Richter Belmont, Ridley and King K. Rool were added by fans request from the Smash Bros. Ballot. Sakurai also mentions that  King K Rool’s character concept was meant to be heavy, but intended to have him do things that a heavy character wouldn’t normally be capable of doing.

Lastly from this portion of the interview, Sakurai goes in detail as to why Piranha Plant was chosen as a fighter for the game. He mentions that the development team felt that the game’s roster already featured many heroes and by adding more, it would make it a bit boring. Piranha Plant is a well-known character and it was chosen because it wasn’t a hero, making the roster a bit more diverse and fun.

A part-two of this interview is expected to be released soon and we’ll be sure to follow-up with new tidbits as we hear more information. Let us know what you think of these choices made by Sakurai and his team and what you’d like to see in the future of the Super Smash Bros. series? For all things, Nintendo, stay tuned to NinMobileNews!
