The mysterious Super Smash Bros. Ultimate save data corruption glitch might be caused by “counterfeit” microSD cards, according to users on the Smash Bros. subreddit.

The thread in question showed how a player’s game data was corrupted while playing online as Pikachu. Users in the thread asked the original poster about where they might have purchased their MicroSD card. Reddit user esponix said: “There’s been a bunch of counterfeit ones on Amazon that lie about their size and cause data corruption.” The same user linked to a tutorial on how to verify the authenticity of a MicroSD card.

Yesterday, Nintendo said they were unable to recreate the save data corruption glitch in All-Star Mode with Piranha Plant. As a result, it seems likely that this might be a MicroSD card issue.

We recommend verifying the authenticity of your MicroSD card before playing Smash, especially if you bought it from Amazon.
