Masahiro Sakurai was approached by Facebook’s Oculus VR team to create VR titles for them in 2015.

Liam Robertson, also known as the Game History Guy, is the host of the Game History Secrets series on the Did You Know Gaming YouTube Channel. In this episode, Robertson discusses Smash Bros. director Masahiro Sakurai’s history with VR and how Oculus approached him to create VR games for them. Blake J. Harris, author of Console Wars and The History of the Future, provided information of this encounter to Robertson.

Sakurai has openly expressed his interest in virtual reality in his weekly column on Weekly Famitsu. Sakurai stated, “I experienced the ‘Oculus Rift’ VR goggles. You’d have to experience it for yourself to understand, so I won’t say much here, but I’m certain it’ll be a hit in the near future.”

Sakurai’s statements on VR eventually reached the founder of Oculus, Palmer Lucky. Eventually, the two met together to discuss the possibility of Sakurai making VR titles for Oculus VR. While Sakurai wanted to make a VR title, he did not want it to be limited to a small audience as it would have been exclusive to the Oculus VR platform. Sakurai eventually went on to direct Super Smash Bros. Ultimate for Nintendo Switch.
